18 years ago, we opened Ozumo on the waterfront in San Francisco.

Ozumo was the first of its kind: a 6,000 sq. ft. Japanese restaurant with award-winning design featuring a Sushi bar, Robata grill and a beautiful - and soon to be boisterous - Sake lounge. Sushi AND Robata? Sure. We believed there was no reason not to enjoy both sushi as well as other delicious dishes from Japan during your dining experience. We knew that Sake is best enjoyed chilled so we sourced from Japan the best brands they had. We felt that our wonderful local California wines would also pair perfectly well with Japanese food - revolutionary at the time - and were happy to see our customers agreed. We introduced Shochu spirits and signature cocktails such as our, now famous, Giddy Geisha and Sumokaze to boot! We’ve had a ton of fun and take great pride in our loyal customer base and continuing success in San Francisco for all these years.

Now, we are honored and excited to join the vibrant Santana Row community and introduce Ozumo to San Jose. Adhering to Ozumo tradition, our menu will offer both Sushi and Izakaya small plates. For those just discovering the joys of an Izakaya experience…Welcome! Japanese commonly describe Izakaya cuisine as “Drinking Food”, and they’re right! I-Sake-Ya translates to “Standing Sake Shop”. Beginning in the Meiji Period, Sake shop owners began offering small plates of food as customers sampled their sake. Noticing that customers were in no hurry to leave, some enterprising owners set out tables and chairs, and the modern-day Izakaya was born.

Ozumo Santana Row will feature another first: an outdoor Japanese Beer Garden, sheltered in the atrium next to us. Look for Japan’s Big Three brands – Sapporo, Kirin and Asahi - and sample from our handpicked list of Japanese craft beers that are making a big splash with beer aficionados. We’ll also be featuring cocktails designed by celebrity mixologist, Rob Floyd,and be stocking our shelves with a notable selection of fine Japanese Whisky, including the near-impossible to get Suntory Hibiki 21!
